What is Patau's Syndrome?

Patau's Syndrome is a hereditary disorder which include extra copy of chromosome 13 which can cause to mental retardation.

Causes of Patau's Syndrome

Patau's Syndrome occurs because of the extra chromosome 13 in the cell or it may be hereditary disorder.

Symptoms of Patau's Syndrome

low birth weight
may cause to deafness
heart defects
cleft lip or palate
mental retardation
abnormal face, head and skull bones
breathing problem
genital abnormality
defects in the eye development

Treatment of Patau's Syndrome

There is no cure for Patau's Syndrome. Some physical abnormality can be treat by medication and Tube feeding or the placement of a gastric tube should be used for the feeding problem. Surgery can be used to treat cleft lip and cleft palate. Diets, hearing aids, and vision aids can be used to treat hearing and vision problem. Physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy can help to meet their potential.
